Kenshi Yonezu Unveils Anime Music Video for “Donut Hole 2024,” Created by Production I.G
Kenshi Yonezu has uploaded an anime music video for “Donut Hole,” the vocaloid song he first released in 2013 as Hachi.
Expanding upon the original music video, which featured Yonezu-drawn shonen manga-inspired illustrations of GUMI, Hatsune Miku, Megurine Luka, and Kagamine Rin, the new version depicts the four vocaloid characters battling against armed forces from the wealthier part of their city who are after a mysterious black creature.
The “Donut Hole” anime music video is produced by Production I.G and storyboarded and directed by Yuki Kamiya (Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 “Shibuya Incident Arc” opening, Chainsaw Man Ending 3 and 8), who also handled the compositing, editing, and 2D design work. Kamiya was recently on the anime music video for Midnight Grand Orchestra‘s “Allegro.”
Among the other names on the production credits are Tetsuya Masuda (Deca-dence co-visual concept artist) as mechanical designer, Takahiro Chiba (Haikyu!!: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump chief animation director) as animation director, Sayoko Noda (Moriarty the Patriot) as color designer, Ichiro Tatsuta (Haikyu!!: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump) as background art director, and Takahiro Okumura (Ace of Diamond Season 2) as compositing director.
Chiba was also responsible for the animation’s character designs, which were adapted from new illustrations by Yonezu.
According to Yonezu, the idea for making a new “Donut Hole” music video spawned from talks with chocolate maker GODIVA about releasing Donut Hole-themed products. These GODIVA X HACHI Donut Hole Collection chocolates will be on sale from October 1 JST to November 31 JST. The cheapest product is a two-piece box costing 1,026 yen (~US$7.24), while the priciest is a 10-piece box that costs 4,320 yen (~US$30.49). These prices are tax-inclusive.
Some of the chocolates have an illustration of one of the four vocaloids from “Donut Hole.” To get all four, customers will have to buy the six- or 10-piece box. In addition to the chocolate boxes, the GODIVA X HACHI Donut Hole Collection also has a 264 yen (~US$1.86) gift bag.
