Weekly Seasonal Anime Roundup: Summer 2024, Week 10
It feels like every week of anime is big now. Some really huge and cute emotional stories are there. On the other end, some really sad, dramatic moments that are the highest level for their episodes. As usual, it matters what the execution is because some series that are hodged podged together flow more naturally then clunky shows. Read on to learn more.

Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf Episode 23
I’m very happy this arc is getting so complicated. It’s engaging more deeply with religion now. Well, at least the recent priest Elsa is grappling a lot with seeing the real form of Holo. How she sees Holo as a pagan god and she is helping Holo to find her way home. That’s good stuff. Same with Lawrence and Holo reading pagan text together. The ending with the villagers entering to arrest Holo and Lawrence because their wheat led to the death of someone in the city nearby is huge. I wonder where that’s going. I’m so curious to see more.

Wonderful Precure Episode 32
Just another cute episode with a wolf trying to create a conflict and it being pretty well contained in the end. After the first appearance of a Gaogaon, they really aren’t as powerful as they were in their premiere. But this episode was about the gang visiting the petting zoo and it was mostly a comfy time. Even the Soaring Sky Precure crew were there in the background with their more than larger bit of a cameo. Plus, it’s cool seeing Mayu get comfortable with the animals and Iroha seeing her favorite elephant Sakura. I’m sad that Sakura was Gaogaon’d by Zakuro, but the animals standing up for their love of Sakura was pretty infectious. So yeah, can’t help but say I loved this episode quite a bit.

The Fable Episode 22
It’s interesting seeing what the smaller Yakuza faction is doing to get revenge on Akira. Otsuba is pushing Hina against Akira with Suzuki planning his possible escape from Japan. Otsuba and Suzuki are also making their massive preparations to finally take Akira down. It’s interesting seeing that planning is going to smoke immediately from the villain’s home alone trap and the Suzuki is completely confused seeing Akira two floors down. Going to be pretty heavy mob stuff going forward. I love how realistic this world is and then Akira just breaks all the rules.

Dead Dead Demons Dedede Destruction Episode 16
This episode was horrifying in interesting ways. The Internet is down, the heads of the Japanese government pushed aside their prime minister and left in their arc, and Aoba searched through dimensions to find a way to stop the ship from destroying everyone, and the girl’s summer vacation is almost over. Each one crazier then the last with the final moment of the episode having a reporter explaining the truth to all of Japan before he killed himself. So much huge things as human kind has 15 minutes left.

Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture Episode 12 (Finale)
I wish I felt something more then I do right now. Another Code Geass show is over and I do wish that it would have something other then defeat the bad guy and then everything is slightly better. Or that slightly less then the run time of this episode wasn’t based on members of the og Code Geass cast who did little more then talk and add almost nothing. The main story was Ashe and Sakuya working together to defeat Norland and they did have to work hard to do it. But there is also a bit of a sad ending where Sakuya is separated from Ashe in the end. She also lives from now on by taking away her voice to deactivate her Geass from the world. It’s a good concept, but it doesn’t have enough time to set in. Yeah, it’s just a miss.

Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings In Russian Episode 10
The student council election is still coming around and it’s cool to have a lot of interesting character moments. Mainly between Kuze and Alya again from her calling him when he failed to focus or when the two went on a date. The two are getting very close and more relaxed with each other and Alya was able to get Kuze on edge. Other then that, it’s been parent student conferences and that is bringing the conflict between the parent Kuze chose and the parent Yuki chose. So in general, just a good and relaxing episode.

Dungeon People Episode 9
I really enjoyed this episode once again. There really is a big feminist sort of story of a young girl owning a business that runs the economy of entire kingdoms. It’s interesting that there is a rule that the new King has to fight the owner of that dungeon for control every time a new king appears. So clearly, this episode was Belle and Clay (in a maid outfit) showing they are more powerful than the strongest warriors in the kingdom. Plus, the king gains a crush on Clay which is interesting. I also love the trope of stronger people being underestimated, so this episode was another bit of fun of seeing how the dungeon works.

Narenare -Cheer for You!- Episode 10
The summer season of the Pom Pomu crew is over after many days of working hard and traveling. The montage of the crew cheering in so many locations as well as endless travel from one location to another was fun but also looked exhausting. The aftermath with the girls in school and having stronger communication then ever before was pretty solid stuff. Same with Kanata at least helping out in her school’s cheer club even if she hasn’t flew yet. I love her eagerness to start at the beginning again. Same with her confronting the one person who wrote a hate comment after they quit cheer. It’s a good episode that rushed a lot of things too much perhaps.

Kinnikuman Perfect Origin Episode 9
The ending of the battle between Atlantis and Marlinman was heart breaking. Atlantis really put in his all to at least tie in combat based on a boy cheering for him. The guy pulled of an attack after his last opponent Robin Mask’s attack. Atlantis put his life into it and the watchers are giving so much disrespect and that’s at sad. After that, the show switched to combat against Kinnikuman vs peak a boo and now Kinnikuman is in trouble. Going to be interesting to see what he does to win. So yeah, good episode.

Tower of God Season 2 Episode 10
It looks like Khun and Bam are going to join together soon again. But once again, this show is just a lot of loose scenes that are kind of, sort of strung together in semi coherent way. Ilmar traveled to find his friend and Khun’s gang was already taking down traps and searching for some kind of treasure there. Thus Bam and friends also started to head towards the place of the giant hand. I wish the lore was inserted in a more natural way to make the cohesion a bit better. It’s just lucky to feel as close to cohesive as it is.

The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies Episode 9
It’s a cute christmas episode, what do you expect? I think the biggest thing was the meeting of the two classes from Mira who can buy anything at a moment’s notice and Byakuya who works impossibly hard every day and doesn’t need the highest prize or the highest level material. Then Hibana and others show up for the secret Christmas party between the two love birds and had their weird family moment together and even the evil group got some cheer through so many Christmas cakes. Just a good time like most Christmas episodes. It is still adorable after all.

Bye Bye, Earth Episode 9
This episode felt like the emotional core of the entire show. From Belle failing her test and not being able to handle loneliness and how she affects people. She is one girl who still doesn’t understand her place in the world enough to make it outside the door with all her life. On the other end, there is Adonis who is the literal incarnate of death killing Solists and so many other people around him and the music of the test doesn’t even work for him. Truly an interesting test of faith though Adonis is not close to redeemable now because he had an arc but he did sexually assault Belle. He lost all the respect that I ever got from him because that damaged everything. But there is a lot of compelling writing in this episode that makes it strong.

Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! Episode 9
I’m not sure how I feel about how the new girl, Himemiya, is treated from putting her in fanservice heavy costumes for the coming festival or her first appearance falling down the stairs and squishing Nukumizu with her boobs. At least Lemon is canonically known to not have common decency when wearing stuff. But the rest of the episode from Komari gets help from Nukumizu and the club after working herself to the point of passing out. Yeah, the club supporting Komari showing she doesn’t have to do everything is great. Same with them noticing that Nukumizu getting caught for doing the same thing. Yeah, just comfy times with Anna even sharing food for once at the end. Just good vibes in general.
