Weekly Seasonal Anime Watchlist: Summer 2024 – Week 11
It’s still surprising to me that the season is almost over. So that means either seeing the penultimate episodes or seeing the direction of how a show is going to conclude. So I find all of this just incredibly interesting. I do find that I can feel the quality of all of these shows already unless there is a sudden uptick. That hasn’t happened yet though.

Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf Episode 23
This was a good in between episode. One where the stakes of the town and their doomed economic situation due to bad wheat that killed people in the city nearby. At the same time, it also makes sense that the towns people would look at the newcomers of Holo and Lawrence suspiciously as well as the priest Else and her friend Evan. Then the tension continued to the point where all four of them had to escape soon. So Holo has been revealed to more people and Holo did learn her friends and at least left her home town safely. There was wheel spinning, but the content was good.

Wonderful Precure Episode 33
Pretty simple but relaxing episode. Especially with Iroha’s dad getting the spotlight in his own way. What a wonderful, gentle giant. Though, I thought an episode about using a higher pitch voice for animals would be an earlier episode. Oh well, it was pretty great and adorable. Plus the Gaogaon was a cute pig that wanted to play in the mud. So generally was a cute, fun episode.

The Fable Episode 23
Pretty complicated sort of yakuza fight episode. One that ended up in the woods. You know, the woods that Akira fought a bear in. A lot of little moments from Yoko being captured but being completely calm to Hina rebelling against Otsuba to the dorky Ryou helping Akira with a very nice and fast car. Akira performing high level drifting was crazy. It was full of good and amazing moments that I couldn’t help but love it all.

Dead Dead Demons Dedede Destruction Episode 17
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel…pretty sad actually. As far as we know, the world hasn’t ended yet. Oba was able to get to the generator to stop the Earth’s destruction even against cult leaders, but not in enough time to completely stop it. Tokyo is dead and so are other major cities in the world with a very Evangelion looking hand appearing from different dimensions. All while every character seems to reflect a little bit and Kadode and Ontan even kissing on their way to Tokyo. A huge reflective finale for all of it. What will happen now that Tokyo is dead but most of the humanity is still around.

Oshi No Ko Season 2 Episode 10
This feels like a red herring conclusion to Aqua’s hunt for his mother’s killer. I mean, his only thought was finding his father and he thought his half brother Himekawa, the stage actor, was the killer. Turned out that Himekawa’s parents were killed in a double suicide. A complete dead end for now. Though Ruby and B Komachi started their work towards making a larger presence online with their original song and everything. It’s another in-between and set up episode, but it’s a good one. I’m sure this one will lead to some interesting and dramatic arcs in the future.

Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings In Russian Episode 11
Another big reveal towards Kuze’s story from a nightmare. One where all the best things he can do at his mother’s elite home from earning top grades to performing Piano at the highest level. All we see is none of that is enough. It makes sense why he made the choice to follow his father then his mother in this case. Yuki planning and scheming to keep Kuze asleep while Alya and her have a small encounter on the morning news was a big hit too. She really did want Kuze to feel better but lose too. Very dramatic. I think that reveal and the possible rise of Alya and Kuze in the future was a good time. There is some compelling drama here alongside some fun otaku stuff that pushes too hard sometimes. Didn’t go too far with Alya and Ayano visiting Kuze’s house though.

Dungeon People Episode 10
A bit of a slower episode this week. But one that raises some very important questions. One of which is Belle constantly working and never sleeping. Especially since the dungeon is her home. Though there are questions of Clay’s story from never knowing her parents to being raised by a person in the dungeon. Plus, learning about how goblins are grown like plants instead of usual ways was good. Belle is a master of saying the most sinister things in cute ways without thinking about how messed up they are. Very interesting bit of things to push some things forward more.

Narenare -Cheer for You!- Episode 11
This show has such good concepts, but its focus is so strange to me. I mean, this obviously features the relationship of Kanata and her senpai Mari. Especially since Mari stomped on Kanata’s spirit which also crushed hers. So seeing Mari join Pom Pom for a little bit and being a helping hand was cool. I just wish the ending wasn’t after the credits in a montage. Give that time to Kanaa and Mari to develop their relationship more as well as featuring more of Pom Pom before Mari disappeared. It’s such a weird decision even if the result was good. It feels natural to spread everything out a bit more because the goal was Kanata joining her school’s cheer team again. Hmmm.

Kinnikuman Perfect Origin Episode 10
This episode was another beautifully animated fight. It was a big Kinnikuman growth arc as Peak A Boo took all of his biggest techniques. It was the biggest sort of thing where Kinnikuman won his fight by pulling out the basics of wrestling that was instilled in him. Since Peak A Boo is an exponential growth character who just learns the better way to do big moves without learning any of that. A massive bond joined between them where Peak A Boo is attempting to break away from his Perfect Order group and boss Budo to become his own person. Very simple but very compelling stuff. Just really enjoyed it.

Tower of God Season 2 Episode 11
Yeah, finally giving this one a good because it was a well done dramatic piece. You know, for the most part. Our main right winged devil was fighting for rage and his life and died by the surprise behind him. Voile shows up and then really causes a massive amount of drama against the two people fighting our main guy. Then of course Khun shows up, the tension wretches up a bit with Voile being put at knife point. Just saying that it is a very interesting thing and I am not even mentioning a lot of side characters in the situation. In general, just some pretty solid stuff and I couldn’t describe it well enough.

The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies Episode 10
I didn’t enjoy this episode that much. The villain side with Mira putting together a meeting with his interesting crew of villainy was fun. At the same time, the daily life of Byakyua from getting sexually assaulted waking up her familiar to the familiar wanting to see her magical girl outfit get less and less clothing, and bath house stuff when the familiar showed his more yakuza form. I didn’t really like any of those things in motion. I am sure there are some themes I am missing but I don’t really care about them that much in the moment.
Episode Rating: Okay, it’s bad.
Bye Bye, Earth Episode 10 (Finale)
I wasn’t expecting a finale but then this one constantly pulls turns I didn’t expect. Partially because I am constantly in the trying to figure it out mode. Or partially because the direction of this show with all of its terminology doesn’t make sense all the time. But the character notes are pretty big and obvious and the rest kind of drops to the wayside for me. Just know that Belle is at a low point after Adonis sexually assaulted her and she couldn’t be as bad ass as usual. At the same time, Adonis is getting training on using his evil sword and is the opposite of Belle now. There is some heavy stuff there. Definitely a big sort of cliff hanger moving forward. I suppose I am interested in the second season.

Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! Episode 10
This one feels like a huge conclusion to the seniors leaving the literature club. Komari has the literature club festival showcase of her dreams and it went well. Plus Anna was her ever indulgent self as she should be. I loved that Lemon has a team of fangirls around her when a track student showed up to challenge her and she just won. Plus, something is up with the student council. But all in all a good send off to the seniors with Komari and Nukumizu looking towards the future. It’s just great honestly.
